blog 9 – personal learning network

A personal learning network (PLN) can be used to great effect for many components, including in professional development post-course. The connections that are formed in PLNs are invaluable, even in professional settings. They can help to determine where new skills are necessary and help to provide counterpoints to existing skills and ideas. Moreover, as was shown by the individuals building the podcast, relying on a PLN means continued exposure to a variety of ideas and constructive criticism that ultimately makes you stronger in whatever area you want to excel. While it is not necessarily prudent to state that a PLN can be “relied upon” to open professional opportunities, individuals within this network can certainly recommend another person to opportunities that might open because they are aware of the skills you might possess.

Globalization and new reliance on technology has created unique opportunities for a more informed and connected society (Del Giudice, Rosaria Della Peruta and Carayannis 73). This means that PLNs are more informed about their responsibilities within the larger network and stand ready to assist those in their networks with opportunities for professional development. As society becomes more connect through social media and other platforms, people may be more likely to participate in the information society through networks. Using connections formed through PLNs helps all involved as those doing the recommending are not making blind recommendations in professional situations, while those that are looking for professional opportunities get the access they need as well.
